Driving golf development

In an effort to grow the game of golf in the Benoni area, the Nomads Golf Club, a national golf club, made up of like-minded golfers who get together to play the sport around the country while raising money for the less fortunate and the furtherance of golf, have funded the construction of a new driving range at Benoni Lake Club.

As the Lake Club is the largest golf club in Ekurhuleni in terms of membership, the Nomads were approached by them to assist with the establishment of a new driving range.

Nomads agreed to support the project and, on Saturday, November 9, the club officially unveiled the new driving range.

The aim of the project is to grow the game among the youth, disabled and previously disadvantaged in Ekurhuleni.

The range will also boast a development academy, spearheaded by Marius Mizen, head coach of the junior academy, Wings Golf Academy.

Derek Wright, chairman of Benoni Lake Club, said the driving range is brilliant for the club and thanked the Nomads for the entire development.

Robbie Frank, the national chairman of Nomads, said the funds were raised through the Golforama scoring system, a cleverly devised system by Nomads, to facilitate “real-time” scoring at professional and other events in Southern Africa, sanctioned by the South African Golf Association, Sunshine Tour and European Tour Events.

The system relies on volunteers from Nomads giving up their personal time to assist at tournaments, by operating electronic equipment supplied by the Sunshine Tour organisers to record players’ scores at each of the 18 holes.

The money the Nomads are paid contributes to the furtherance of golf around South Africa and neighbouring African countries.

Matthew Dudley, vice-captain of the Easterns Nomads Club and member of the Lake Club, said he was very fulfilled and satisfied that the project had been completed, and praised the excellent partnership between Benoni Lake Club and the Nomads.
