Seasoned hijacker and robber shot in leg

A man believed to be a seasoned hijacker and house robber was shot in the leg and arrested, on Wednesday, August 28.

The man, aged between 25 and 30, has for long been on the police’s most wanted list, in connection with several house robberies and hijackings in Springs.

The Benoni police were also positive about linking him to such crimes.

He was shot by the Springs police detective team, after they traced him to a shop in Tom Jones Street, in Benoni.

When he noticed the police he ran away, but they gave chase and shot him in the leg, in the Lakeside Mall driveway, in Rothsay Street.

The Springs detectives started following the man’s moves on Sunday, August 25, after he and an accomplice allegedly hijacked an Audi, in Springs.

“Detectives traced the car to Daveyton, through a tracker, and recovered it, but the men managed to evade them,” said police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele.

The suspect’s luck finally ran out on Thursday, but his accomplice still managed to escape.

The police are, however, hopeful that he will be found.

The man who was arrested was attended to by paramedics at the scene.

Such arrests come as a relief to Benoni residents, as the area has seen its fair share of house robberies and hijackings, with most reported in Rynfield, Northmead and Farrarmere.

At last month’s CPF meeting, Benoni Visible Policing head Col Thomas Maupa admitted such crimes are a challenge.
