CGA meeting a success despite bus accident

Several athletes were in an bus accident just outside the venue. Only one was seriously injured and required medical attention while the rest have been discharged.

The last meeting of the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) cross-country season on July 22 in Delta Park started on a grim note with the organisation reporting that several athletes were involved in a bus accident outside the venue.

According to the organisation, only a single athlete sustained serious injuries and had to remain in hospital while rest were discharged.

“We wish all the injured athletes who were involved in the above mentioned accident speedy recovery,” said CGA GM Mandla Radebe.

The action continued despite the unfortunate incident and true to what’s been happening all season, the athletes left nothing to chance.

The local athletes from Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) and East Athletic Club (EAC) in particular, were among some of the top performers on the day.

Alexia Visser from the BNAC opened the gates with an impressive 05:27 finish in the girls’ U8 1km dash earlier in the day while her teammate Khaya Madonsela claimed another podium, with an outstanding 08:10 finish for the second spot in the boys’ U10 2km race.

Youngster Zandrèh van der Merwe won the boys’ U11 3km race in 12:24 ahead of Olwethu Ramasodi and Kamogelo Kgwete.

The EAC’s Mahlatse Mamonyane claimed another top position in the girls U10 2km race, finishing in 08:11 for first place. Her teammates Bonolo Mokabane and Avuma Pheza finished second in the junior women and youth men’s 2km events.

The girls’ U12 3km race was another highlight of the day, with the EAC’s Mmathapelo Ntanga winning in a time of 13:05. Siyanda Madlabane from the BNAC won the boys’ category, clocking 08:47 for first place.

Jade Doran from BNAC continued with her good performances with a second place spot in the girls’ U14 4km.
This was the last event before the provincials on August 19 in Kagiso.

The CGA has confirmed that only the athletes that finish in the top four will be part of the provincial team for the Athletics South Africa (ASA) national cross country championships in Gqeberha in September.

The organisation is urging athletes, parents and clubs to take note of the following:

• Copies of their IDs or birth certificates must be submitted by August 16. They won’t be accepted on the day of the provincial championships.

• Athletes with the letter “N” next to their names in the results sheet cannot win medals, prize money or be selected for the provincial team to the nationals.

• No temporary licenses will be allowed at the provincials. All athletes must be licensed with a Club,” said Radebe
• Entries open on July 31 and will close on August 13.

• Only pre-entries submitted on https://cgacrosscountry.wixsite.com/home will be accepted.
• No late entries and entries on the day of the championships will be accepted.
