EMPD cracks the whip in Crystal Park

Undocumented persons suspected to be involved in illegal mining activities were arrested.

Members of the EMPD Bronberg Precinct arrested 12 undocumented men and women during a crack-down in Crystal Park on June 19.

The high-density operation, which was conducted in conjunction with the SAPS, Gauteng crime prevention wardens and CPF patrollers, focused on illegal activities, especially in the N12 informal settlement at the Putfontein off-ramp.

“Several shacks were demolished after it was found that undocumented persons, suspected to be involved in illegal mining operations, were living in these structures,” said Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, EMPD spokesperson.

“Two women and 10 men were arrested for failing to produce valid identification documents. Illegal mining implements including generators, pendugas, wheelbarrows, gas cylinders and shovels were confiscated.”

Alcohol valued at R3 000 was confiscated from an illegal shabeen.

Officers further shut down an illegal shabeen and confiscated R3 000 worth of alcohol.

“The beverages were booked in as evidence at the Crystal Park Police Station as the shabeen was operating without a valid liquor license,” said Thepa.

Those arrested face charges under the Immigration Act (Act 13 of 2002) and will appear in court soon.
