St Dunstan’s learners embark on day of service

The learners swapped their books for gloves as they participated in various community outreach projects.

The streets in and around Benoni were abuzz when the St Dunstan’s College learners embarked on their annual Service Day.

The school relaunched the community outreach programme on June 14 after a brief hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The high school divided the learners into 13 groups. Ten visited NPOs caring for elderly people, the disabled, children and animals. The remaining three roamed the streets participating in clean-up projects.

Under the guidance of Samantha Choles from Litter Bugs and Clean Projects’ Alison Etherington, the learners wielded tongs and had plenty of refuse bags to pick up litter.

Found in Hospital Road, Northmead, these learners from St Dunstan’s did not squirm away from getting their hands dirty picking up litter.

While filling his bag, Kieran Howett (19) said he opted to participate in the clean-up because he was tired of seeing litter on the side of the roads.

“If we don’t undertake to clean up our neighbourhood, who will?” he asked.

“We all need to take responsibility for our community and the environment.”

Collecting rubbish are Vunani Zwane (15) and Kalvin Mthombeni (14).
