LETTER: Were you in Tom Newby class of 59?

David Eadie writes:

I completed Standard Five (Grade Seven) at Tom Newby School in 1959 together with about 70 other learners.

The only three former classmates I have had any contact with since our Standard Five party in the Voortrekker Saal are Eddie Meek and more recently David Scholtz and Teddy Hodgkinson.

I’ve been in communication with David and Teddy and after applying our minds, we developed a list primarily of those in our class – although we had two Standard Five classes.

The reason I lost contact is that in Standard Six, I went to boarding school in Potchefstroom and after that, I went to the University of Cape Town and then remained in Cape Town, married and became a resident.

I often think back to that group who were prime in my life at the time and wonder how I ever allowed those special links to evaporate.

I had thought to round up whoever remains or is contactable of the class of 1959 to prepare for a 65-year reunion in 2024, preferably in person but could well be virtual – or both.

I look forward to any communication.

I think also of Heather, Virginia, Jenny, Dotty, Jill, Dianne, Lorraine, Sarah (what an athlete!) Leonard, Brian, Devvy, David S, David E and Teddy often.
