House robberies, hijackings spike in Benoni

Remain alert and prevent becoming a victim of crime.

According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station, there has been an increase in house and business robberies and hijackings across the entire Benoni area.

In light of this, the police are urging residents, guesthouse owners and motorists to remain vigilant, especially over the upcoming long weekends.

In the cases of house robberies, the modus operandi of criminals is posing as job seekers wanting to do maintenance work or contractors assigned to conduct work.

“Once granted access to the homes, residents are held up and the suspects ransack the residence in search of cash, jewellery, firearms and other valuables,” said Sekele.

“Guesthouses are also being targeted as suspects gain entry to the premises requesting to view the facilities. Once inside, they proceed to rob employees and guests at gunpoint.”

It is advised that viewings are scheduled by appointment only.

She further stated that hijackings are once again on the increase with criminals targeting motorists travelling on remote roads.

“Members of the public are urged to remain aware of their surroundings at all times,” Sekele said.

“Report any suspicious persons to your security company, CPF or the CrimeStop hotline on 08600 10111.”
