Bert adds another candle to his cake

He is the oldest resident in the Rynpark community.

It was balloons, cake and cheers throughout Rynpark 4 when residents, staff and friends gathered to wish Bert Denman a happy birthday.

The former RAF veteran celebrated his 103rd birthday on March 22 with his beloved wife of 13 years, Ann, receiving gifts from friends on their sunny porch.

Joking about her husband’s longevity, Ann said she is not only married to a centenarian but is also the proud owner of the oldest dishwasher.

“He uses no electricity and leaves the dishes sparkling clean, the perfect commodity in a country where load-shedding is rife,” she said.

“I suppose he keeps running in tip-top condition due to his bowl of morning oats, served with a drizzling of whiskey.”

Although his hearing might be failing, Bert says he always knows when he is the topic of conversation because his ears start burning.

“I have been blessed with a wonderful life,” said Bert.

“If there were any problems, it was probably created by my own doing.”

Bert is the father of three children, all of whom are now enjoying their retirement, 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

“I would like to thank everyone for celebrating this day with me and for the beautiful cake,” said Bert.

“I believe the balloons are the result of a generous donation. Next year, they need only to send a number four. I will hang on to the other numbers until then.”
