Organisations join forces to educate community about GBV

They recruited volunteers who will become GBV activists.

The Samukelo Esihle Community Project and Community Media Trust (CMT) hosted a gender-based violence (GBV) awareness campaign in Mayfield on February 1.

According to Samukelo Tshabalala, the initiative aims to educate the community about the root causes of violence, the role of gender in violence and what action to take when in a violent relationship.

“We invited the CMT to recruit volunteers to become part of the Start, Awareness, Support and Action (SASA) programme to help fight the scourge of GBV.

“The volunteers were trained and given certificates afterwards. They will qualify to be GBV activists after completing the four-day SASA programme. They will then form part of awareness-driven programmes to advocate against GBV in the community.

“We had Shout It Now, which rendered biomedical services to our volunteers while services like HIV testing, PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), family planning and GBV counselling were provided,” she said.
