Keep your pets safe and cool

People and animals alike are at risk during heatwaves

While temperatures in Gauteng are expected to reach as high as 36°C this week, the Benoni SPCA has warned pet owners to take precautions to safeguard their animals.

According to the manager of the Benoni SPCA, Darryn Potgieter, it is important to make sure your pets have plenty of fresh water throughout the day.

“Limit playtime and rather exercise during early mornings or late in the afternoon when it is cooler.

“Remember to take care when walking your pet. Check to see if the surface you are walking on is not too hot,” said Potgieter.

He added they haven’t yet experienced incidents where the heatwave has negatively affected animals.

“On January 23, one of our inspectors stopped a couple walking their dog to educate them about walking dogs on a hot tar road,” he said.
