Church’s shop aims to restore dignity to those in need

When considering a charitable gift, consider vouchers for God’s Pantry

Whether it is a basket filled with daily essentials or clothes for an ever-growing little one, God’s Pantry at the Northfield Methodist Church has happily served members of the community in their ‘shopping’ experience since opening its doors in September.

The shop allows recipients of vouchers the opportunity to purchase a variety of essentials and other nice-to-haves, thus giving them the freedom of choice, unlike merely receiving food parcels.

Since its opening, mission coordinator Khaya Mnyanda says that mostly middle-aged to elderly females frequent the shop.

“Our mission through the establishment of God’s Pantry is to not only help those in need by filling their cupboards or stomachs but by allowing them to shop at their leisure and restore their dignity,” he said.

“Recipients have the freedom of choice to buy items that not only feed their bodies but may fulfil a yearning.”

Tinned foods are some of the top sellers, as Khaya explains that these are easy to consume on the go.

“Some of our clients do not have access to cooking facilities so tinned foods make it easier to stave off hunger,” he said.

“Seasonal harvests from our veggie garden are also occasionally available, much to the delight of shoppers.”

He said that regular donations of non-perishable foods from local businesses ensure that the racks are always fully stocked with a variety of products but says they are always happy to receive more.

God’s Pantry will remain open during the festive season, barring public holidays and members of the public are urged to consider blessing those less fortunate with vouchers.

“When buying vouchers, the community member has the choice of handing it to a recipient that they feel may benefit from it, alternatively it may be left at the church to distribute,” said Khaya.

The shop is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30 to 12:30.

Vouchers are available from the church office, during weekdays or at the bookshop, on Sundays.
