BFS arrest six and recovers vehicles

Investigation continues in all cases

Mid-week operations conducted by members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS), from November 8 to 10, led to the arrest of six suspects and the recovery of four vehicles.

Possession of drugs
Three suspects were arrested in separate incidents for possession of crystal methamphetamine, in Woburn Avenue, Benoni, as well as Northrand and Voortrekker roads, Kempton Park.

A fourth suspect was arrested at Aviator Place, Kempton Park for dealing in dagga.

An additional charge of bribery was added when the suspect allegedly offered officers R1 000 for his release.

Reckless and negligent driving
On November 10, at 10:30, members gave chase after a red Mazda 3 when the driver sped away after being stopped at the vehicle check-point on the N12 near the Kingsway off-ramp.

“After being stopped, the passenger of the vehicle got out of the vehicle but got back in when the driver started driving away, as officers were approaching,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, BFS spokesperson.

“Officers gave chase, after which a shoot-out ensued when the passenger started firing at the BFS vehicle.”

The suspects abandoned the vehicle in the Everest informal settlement and attempted to flee.

“Members managed to arrest the driver but his accomplice remains at large,” said Giblin.

Charges of reckless and negligent driving as well as attempted murder, has been brought against the driver.

Hijacked vehicle
Following up on information, a white Toyota Fortuner that had been reported as hijacked in Daveyton was recovered at the Chris Hani informal settlement, at 20:30 on November 10.

The vehicle’s dashboard has been stripped as the hijackers attempted to locate the tracking device.

One suspect was arrested.

Abandoned vehicles
Three abandoned motor vehicles were recovered:

• A silver Toyota Hilux was found on the N12, Atlas Road, it was reported as stolen in Thembisa.

• A red Volkswagen Polo was found in Cason Road, Boksburg North, it was reported as stolen in Edenvale.

• A white Nissan NP300 was found in the Marikana informal settlement, Dann Road, Kempton Park.
