Learner with Down’s syndrome wins double gold at games

She won a gold medal in javelin and discus.

Daveyton resident Nondumiso Khumalo claimed two gold medals at the South Africa Open Games for the intellectually impaired, which took place in White River from October 2 to 7.

The 18-year-old SOWLE Centre learner won the discus and javelin events at the competition. She also achieved her personal best in the javelin.

Nondumiso also competed in the shot put and despite finishing fourth, she bettered her personal best in the event.

“We are all ecstatic, overjoyed and super proud of this young lady,” said SOWLE Centre principal Jacqui Coetzer.
“She was accompanied by her mom, Zama, who always supports her full-heartedly in everything she does and is with her every step of the way,” Coetzer added.

“We look forward to next year where we will be hoping to send more learners to SAs as it will be the year where all age groups will be able to compete. It is full steam ahead for all the learners at SOWLE Centre to prepare for next year,” Coetzer added.

Nondumiso started participating in athletics in 2019.

According to Coetzer, despite her condition, Nondumiso is an active learner who also takes part in other extra-mural activities.

“She participates in all extra-mural activities offered by the school – dance, drama, percussions, art and also practised the guitar when we had a teacher offering lessons. She also has a beautiful singing voice,” she said.
“She always gives her best in everything that she does. She has a wonderful work ethic and determination to achieve. She enjoys everything that she attempts, but loves doing sport the most.”
