Hospice East Rand receives much needed donation

Radio station’s initiative raised over R1m for Hospice

Hospice East Rand recently received their share of R50 000 from the Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels (GMA) fundraiser.

In celebration of Mandela Day, in July, the station’s breakfast team opted to raise funds for the 17 hospice palliative care organisations throughout Gauteng.

Corporates, businesses and individuals supported the day-long telethon pledging a staggering R1 071 500 to the cause.

In commemoration of Madiba’s 104 birthday, GMA rounded the figure off to R104m.

“To say thank you to everyone involved does not seem adequate. We are blown away by our community’s generosity, especially when so many of us are experiencing tough times,” says Hospice Gauteng’s Jacqui Kaye.

Tersia Burger, chairperson of the Gauteng Hospice and Palliative Care Association (GHPCA) stated that palliative care is often undervalued and misunderstood.

“Most people think hospice is a death sentence,” she said.

“Palliative care focuses on relieving pain and suffering of those diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. Hospice does not intend to hasten or postpone death, but we are there to care for patients and family members on their journey.”
