Dojo encourages members to ‘bring a buddy’

First timers were taught the fundamentals of karate

Learning karate is fun, said Sensei John Barnett.

This is why a ‘bring a buddy’ day training session was held at the New World Shotokan Karate Benoni Dojo on August 8.

On the day, the dojo’s members had to bring a friend or family member to train with them in their weekly classes.

Sensei John Barnett leads from the front as he takes first timers through the fundamentals of karate.

“This was great and everyone had a lot of fun,” said Barnett.

Barnett, who is an eighth dan, added that although martial arts require discipline and dedication from all participants, it’s also important to have fun.

“It’s always important to just have a laugh, even if it’s at yourself. Learning to defend oneself requires a holistic approach. First and foremost, to discipline the mind. The brain and body are merely the instruments used to materialise your intentions. As Bruce Lee once commented, ‘you become the weapon’,” Barnett concluded.
