Benoni Lakes Lions need your recyclables

Your trash can help people with disabilities

For a person living with disabilities, 450kg of plastic bottle tops and bread tags is what are needed to secure a new wheelchair.

It is for this reason that the Benoni Lake Lions have partnered with Tops and Tags to assist in collecting recyclable items to help those in need.

As part of the Lions’ five pillars of service, the Benoni Lakes Lions are passionate about making a positive impact on the environment and spearhead several recycling initiatives that not only aid in minimising the carbon footprint but also fund other community outreach projects such as the club’s Recycle for Sight initiative,

“We initially started collecting e-waste, such as printer cartridges, printers, computers and TVs, which are used to fund spectacles as part of Lions International’s Right for Sight programme,” said Pierre Marneweck, environmental project coordinator.

“Just as improved sight can open a new world for recipients of spectacles, mobility give those living with disabilities the opportunity to live more independently.

“These projects have a dual purpose as we are able to help others while contributing to the growing recycling culture.”

Collection bins have been placed at 33 businesses and schools, which if filled could contribute 10kg of tops to the club’s efforts.

Monthly collections will also be held on the first Saturday of every month at the corner of Dodo and Nightingale streets, Atlasville from 08:00 to 10:00 and donations of e-waste, tops, tags, sunglasses, spectacles and books are welcome.

For more information on the project or to become involved, contact Pierre on 082 610 7593.
