Shuttlestars aims to grow participation in badminton with dreamteam tourney

The Peri Poras team of Pedro and Ricardo Vigario won the first ever Shuttlestars Badminton Academy’s DreamTeam Tournament held at John Barrable Hall on August 6.

Parents and their children flocked to the venue to turn the event into a family affair. The pair won racket bags and vouchers.

The tournament featured 32 teams that were divided into four groups, with the group winners advancing to the knockouts.

Young players partnered with their parents and experienced players to battle out for the coveted trophy.

Organiser Dillan Schaap told the paper this is his way of giving back to the sport that moulded him into the person he is today.

“It was a huge success. We want to see families playing the sport again and in an effort to increase excitement and competition, we will be hosting this tournament once every three months.

“Each tournament’s winners will have a chance to defend their crown against other Shuttlestars families around Gauteng and one day, South Africa,” he said.

Schaap expressed his excitement at the support he has received since the academy was launched in June. He said place are already in place to grow the sport in the region.

“Shuttlestars is a badminton family. It’s not just for kids. It’s for the entire community and we look forward to growing the sport.”
