Garlands tickled pink by cancer survivors

Celebrating life with like-minded women unlocks a community with great potential

The future of the Garland Ladies Luncheon Club looks uncertain as the organisation is battling to recruit new members.

The society was founded in 1998 and served as a social club for women in business, thus creating a networking opportunity and some much-needed downtime with a room full of gal-pals.

Meeting on the fourth Thursday of every month, the Garlands also offer exclusive talks on a wide variety of topics, presented by dynamic guest speakers.

During their July lunch meeting, four-time cancer survivor and volunteer for Cansurvive, Raynolda (Pinky) Makhutle along with breast cancer survivor Peggie Morris, not only spoke to the ladies about the importance of regular self-checks but making time for themselves and enjoying the small things that bring them joy.

Cansurvive is comprised of volunteers who regularly participate in fundraising efforts while travelling the country on a fleet of motorcycles to educate and support anyone in the throws of fighting cancer.

Speaking about female cancer has the power to unite women. Seen here celebrating life, health and friendship are Margie Kostelac (Santa’s Shoebox), Raynolda Makhutle (Cansurvive), Jenny Dkarmavir (Chickitas Fashion Boutique), Peggy Morris (Cansurvive) and Lana O’Neill (Benoni City Times editor).

The 65-year-old grandmother of eight believes that she has been able to continuously beat cancer because she refuses to become negative.

“Life is a beautiful gift,” she said.

“To enjoy the life you imagine, you need to be brave in the face of adversity and surround yourself with good friends to help you carry the load when you feel weary.”

The next Garland lunch meeting will be held on August 25 at the Ebotse Country Club and invites fun-loving women of all ages to join as guests.
