Local skaters do well at national championship

The team won a total of three medals at the competition.

Miekie Haasbroek claimed a first place finish in the individual novice solo dance category at the South African Artistic and Inline Speed Championship in Hammanskraal on July 17.

The SK8 Addixion Roller Skating Club member faced stiff competition but held her own in the rink to win the gold, while teammate Jessica van der Merwe finished third to claim a bronze medal.

In the novice team show category, Miekie, Jessica and Ntando Phahlane finished in second place overall to complete a good competition for the Boksburg-based club.

Coach Michael Wait said he was proud of his team and thanked them for their positive attitude.

“I am happy for them. They worked very hard. The three of them had a major fall while practicing the day before the team event. They decided that nothing will deter them and came back strong.

“The girls and parents knew that after our initial practice on July 15 that I will step back and they would be in control. They showed their commitment. I am proud of what they have achieved. They gave it their best,” he said.

The event, hosted by Roller Sport South Africa in collaboration with the Tshwane Metro’s Social Services Department, attracted over 90 skaters from across the country.
