SAAFA, a meeting place for aeronautical enthusiasts

New members are always welcome

Live with your head in the clouds and the wind beneath your wings.

This is how many members South African Air Force Association’s East Rand branch lived throughout their careers within the aviation industry.

Meeting on a monthly basis, the aeronautical enthusiasts enjoy riveting conversations about days gone by but also about new developments that are taking the skies by storm.

SAAFA was founded in 1945 by a veteran pilot from WW1, Colonel Rod Douglas, who experienced the aftermath of the war and witnessed the plight of the widows, children and injured airmen.

SAAFA is open to all enthusiasts and their spouses. Seen here enjoying a meal are David and Judith Taylor.

Today the association offers former servicemen and women as well as aviation specialists across the board a light-hearted atmosphere where like-minded individuals can share their experiences and expertise.

They also do extensive fundraising to offer financial support to veterans through the Care for the Aged programme.

During this month’s meeting held at the Benoni Country Club on July 15, members enjoyed a leisurely lunch, while they caught up on stories of old.
