Kids Haven Teen Hub is open

The centre offers teens a safe space to develop and grow.

In celebration of Youth Day, Kids Haven officially launched its much anticipated Teen Hub on June 16.

The facility has become the latest addition to the organisation and is geared to offering a safe and conducive space for teens to participate in academic and sport related activities.

“This initiative started as dream in 2015 when we noticed that some of the learners that were part of our Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme would return to the centre as young teens, whom have fallen into destructive habits thus needing rehabilitation interventions,” said Kids Haven CEO Sam Mokgopha.

“It led us to question why learners with sound foundation learning would fall victim to abuse or pressure driven behaviour.

“The answer was clear, young teens from vulnerable backgrounds do not have access to a conducive after school facility that can enrich their lives and offer a positive outlet.”

He continued by saying that through the generous donations received, the centre was able to build the Teen Hub and believes that the wealth of activities will help teens acquire new skills, enhance their academic abilities and aid future career choices.

“We have created this centre and now present it to the youth to tell us what their needs are so that we can facilitate growth,” said Mokgopha.

“This space will allow them to express their individuality within the safe confines of these walls.”

The centre currently boasts a state of the art computer centre where members will be taught computer literacy and may be used to complete school assignments requiring research and digital layout.

In an effort to promote literacy, a fully furnished library is available offering reading material including fiction and motivational literary works.

“In addition we will have tutors on hand that will assist learners in all subjects,” said Tshepo Brand, manager of resources, charity shops and the Teen Hub.

“Best of all, these services are free to all registered members.

“We aim to further engage with the youths in order to establish what other activities they would like to interact with at the hub.

“We hope to incorporate skills and activities like sport, arts and culture.”

The Teen Hub is open to youths aged 14 to 18 and will be open on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 14:00 to 17:00 as well as Saturday from 10:00 to 15:00.

Enrolled learners will be expected to attend the hub to take full advantage of the buffet of activities on offer.
