Police visit school as start of National Child Protection Week

The campaign was part of the SAPS efforts to combat abuse against children, while also highlighting other important issues

Ahead of National Child Protection Week, observed annually from May 31 to June 7, members of the Ekurhuleni District SAPS social crime prevention and communications visited Petit High School on May 11 to address learners on teenage pregnancy and substance abuse.

Grade Nine and 10 learners listened to various speakers from SAPS Family Violence and Child Protection Unit (FCS), SAPS Victim Empowerment Service, Department of Health and the EMPD.

Captain Anrika Bell of FCS advised learners not to post naked pictures of themselves on Facebook nor send nude pictures to their boyfriends because this will cause harm to themselves at a later stage.

She also encouraged them not to fall pregnant at a young age.

Sgt Lerato Mopeli of Crystal Park SAPS warned learners not to steal other children’s stationery because it is regarded as theft.

She further enlightened the learners about their rights and responsibilities.

A representative from the health department, Linah Ramoshaba, spoke to the learners about the causes of teenage pregnancy. She advised them to abstain from sex because they were still young.
