Benoni High pipe band takes top honours

Piping tradition remains strong in school

Members of Benoni High School’s pipe band recently raked in the awards at the annual 59th South Coast Highland Gathering in Amanzimtoti.

Awards were handed out for solo performances.

Former matriculant Sebastian Potgieter placed first overall in snare drumming, second in MSR, first in hornpipe and jig snare drumming.

Grade Eight learner Connor Tibbett placed third in the drum pad competition.

Callan Stephen, Grade Nine, placed third in novice B March snare drumming with Reabetswe Taele, Grade Eight, taking second place in novice B March snare drumming and first in junior MSR tenor drumming.

Grade 11 learner David Engles, placed first in junior MSR bass drumming and Ameena Sadath, Grade 11, rated second in junior MSR tenor drumming.

Taking top honours in the chanter competition was Tayla McDonald, Grade Nine, while Glen Bailey, Grade 11, also placed first in novice MSR snare drumming.

Donovan Nelson, Grade 11, placed fourth in open B MSRas well as second in junior MSR snare drumming.
