Benoni Northerns Sport Club celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Enrique Juanas-Uriol is proud to be a member of the Benoni Northerns Sports Club. He’s been a member of the club for 39 years and has been part of the football section since.

Juanas-Uriol is the go-to person for any Northerns football-related matters.

“I have been involved with our club and a member since 1983. I joined the junior football section as a 13-year-old. I grew up in Bezuidenhout Valley and attended King Edwards Primary School.

“My parents moved to Benoni in 1982 after the completion of my primary schooling. I joined Benoni High in 1983 but matriculated from Wordsworth.

“I have met so many interesting people from all walks of life and formed so many friendships through Benoni Northerns. I’ve made so many meaningful connections, not just within the club but in the wider community too.

“I love the social aspect of our club. We reminisce about the sport over a couple of beers, listening to older members and sportspeople tell their stories.

“The club has presented me the opportunity to coach and play the sport I love, be part of the football and main club’s committees and also represent the Eastern Local Football Association as an executive, coach and manager.

“My fondest and proudest memory as a member of this club is when we the first team won the Transvaal 1st division league and the South African club championship in Bloemfontein in 1991. It was an amazing time for the club with players like Gavin Lane, Harold Ellis and Peter Caetano turning professional.

“I am privileged and honoured to have coached three junior footballers that have won the prestigious Benoni Northerns Sports Club sportsperson of the year award for juniors three years in a row, from 2017 to 2019.

“I’m proud to be a part of the club. To the members, staff and management, happy 50th birthday Benoni Northerns. I’m looking forward to the next 50 years.”
