Drugs and weapons confiscated during school raids

Learners had the opportunity to voluntarily give up illegal substances.

A multidisciplinary joint operation, headed by the Benoni SAPS, confiscated drugs, weapons and drug paraphernalia during two surprise school raids on April 26.

Members of the SAPS K9 unit, EMPD K9 unit, Gauteng Traffic, Correctional Service, Community Safety and the Gauteng Department of Education visited the two high schools unannounced to conduct the searches.

“Learners were advised to hand over any illegal substances or any items that were prohibited within the school grounds,” said Capt Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station.

“Dagga, cigarettes, smoking pipes, knives, vapes along with flavours, playing cards and arm belts were confiscated.”

She said learners found in possession of these items were spoken to about the dangers of drug abuse and smoking.

“These are criminal offences. Learners must focus on their studies instead of becoming complicit to criminal activities,” said Sekele.

“Principals, management and other stakeholders welcomed the searches and requested it is done more often.”
