Gay couple celebrates a decade of marriage

Everyone seeks acceptance and happiness

Their special day may have been marred with controversy but 10 years on, Leon and Gavin Mc Linden of Brentwood Park are happier and stronger than ever before.

On May 4, 2012, the City Times reported that the couple was denied the right to wed during a civil ceremony at the Benoni Home Affairs.

Since this debacle, they have enjoyed a decade of marital bliss, fostering deeper respect for one another.

While celebrating their aluminium anniversary, Leon says that he is privileged to be able to share every day with his best friend.

“We have faced many challenges and adversity but one thing remained constant, we carry each other through,” said Leon.

“Our dreams of becoming parents have not been fulfilled. However, we have realised that as long as we are together our lives are complete.”

The couple celebrated the special occasion at Fahrenheit Benoni, where they originally hosted their reception.

“Marriage is a beautiful bond between partners and as long as you focus on living every day as it comes, you are guaranteed to live a happy and healthy life together,” said Gavin.
