EMPD tip of the week
Traffic fines will be issued if any vehicles are found parked on painted islands.
The EMPD has issued a warning to motorists, cautioning them against parking on painted traffic islands.
According to the EMPD, painted islands are the yellow lines painted on a public road.
EMPD media liaison officer Lerato Monyane said these islands are usually painted on a stretch of road adjacent to residential properties.
They are often found next to the lanes used by motorists to exit or enter the road, turn onto another road or into driveways of properties located along a public road.
“You also find these islands next to traffic lights where there are two lanes and the road is not big enough for other vehicles to turn on the right side, especially trucks that have a warning sign ‘this truck uses two lanes to turn’.”
Motorists are prohibited from stopping or parking on painted islands.
“A traffic fine will be issued if a vehicle is found parked on a painted island, as this practice is in contravention of the National Road Traffic Act.”
