Murdered teen laid to rest in Benoni

Family and friends bid a final farewell to murdered teen Neo Mthembu over the weekend.

Tsakani – Murdered Daveyton teen Neo Mahlangu was laid to rest on Saturday afternoon at the Crystal Park Cemetery in Benoni.

Family and friends shared the memories of their time with him and agreed that even though he was a naughty child, he didn’t deserve to die like that.

The 16-year-old’s body was found buried in a hole at the Tsakani home of his aunt, Andile Aalivirah Mthembu, on April 1.

Neo Mahlangu was laid to rest at Crystal Park Cemetery in Benoni on Saturday.

It is alleged Mthembu hired people to dig the hole under the pretence it would accommodate a water tank.

The discovery of his body came after Mthembu’s accomplice informed a relative in KwaZulu-Natal about the killing, who then notified the police.

It is alleged Neo stole R400 from his aunt, who demanded it back and then assaulted him with a stick.

The teenager’s father, George Mogotsi, could not contain himself when describing the state in which his son’s body was found.

“My son died a painful death. He could not defend himself against his aunt’s beatings, as his hands and feet were tied.

“I know my son was a naughty child, but he didn’t deserve to die in that manner. It is even painful that he died at the hands of his aunt, who we trusted to take care of him,” he added.

The father added he is hoping Mthembu will receive just punishment for her actions.

Neo Mahlangu’s friends attended the funeral.

On Monday, the murder accused confessed in front of magistrate Nico Venter in his chambers to killing her nephew.

The confession was made during her bail application at the Tsakani Magistrate’s Court. The 36-year-old was charged with murder, defeating the ends of justice and perjury.

Her case was postponed to April 12 for further investigation. It is expected to be transferred to the regional court.
