Foundation donates bras to Kids Haven

"A bra is an expensive and luxury item that not everyone can afford.”

The Impilo Collection Foundation donated 120 bras to beneficiaries of Kids Haven in Mackenzie Park on March 25.

The foundation, which has been supporting the organisation with sanitary pads since last year March, extended its initiative by donating bras after they were requested to do so by a beneficiary of Kids Haven.

According to Jasmine Black, youth ambassador of the foundation, last year Impilo Collection Foundation collected 6 000 bras at Johannesburg’s Constitutional Hill, which were then distributed to orphanages, care homes and gender-based violence (GBV) shelters.

“Today’s donation is special because a girl from Kids Haven suggested we donate bras to them, and that is how the initiative came about. A bra is an expensive and luxury item that not everyone can afford. Perpetrators believe that by not wearing a bra, girls and women invite rape and sexual attention,” said Black.

The foundation started in 2020 in response to the effects of the pandemic.

“Our first drive was to collect food, which was distributed throughout Gauteng. In the process, we formed relationships with other organisations and have discovered a need that is prevalent in communities affected by GBV. We focused on GBV because of the 2 700 women who died in 2020 because of violence,” said Black.

Kids Haven community worker Mabel Jiyane said: “Since we have a GBV programme, we love the idea of bras being donated to girls because sometimes they are in relationships where they are financially dependent.

“This most often leads to them being violated because of dependency.”

One beneficiary said she is pleased about the donation because it will give her a sense of confidence.
