WATCH: Benoni Lakes Lions Club encourage shoppers to recycle

The Benoni Lakes Lions Club is planning to host the campaign again next year.

Plastic bottle tops, used printer cartridges, old spectacles and other recycling materials were the order of the day during the Benoni Lakes Lions Club eco-friendly awareness campaign held at Lakeside Mall on March 19.

Encouraging shoppers to become active recyclers, the club partnered with Lakeside Mall, Desco Electronic Recyclers, Don’t Waste, Biobin, Enviroman Cartridges, Atlasville Organisation, Tops and Tags for wheelchairs and various organisations in the recycling industry.

According to the Lions project leader Pierre Marneweck, the purpose of the day was to make people aware of the importance of recycling and reducing wastage for a good cause.

Marneweck said because the club is involved in recycling for a cause, they decided to host the campaign in line with Global Recycling Day, commemorated annually on March 18.

“With today’s initiative, we have kickstarted phase one, which is the awareness launch of the recycling. For phase two, we are intending to link it with World Environmental Day where we will invite green-conscious companies who will again extend the awareness we are pushing today. Likely, our venue will be at a school because we believe it’s important to include future leaders of tomorrow,” said Marneweck.

The project leader shared that all proceeds donated to Desco go towards their Bright Sight project.

Lions Operation Brightsight, part of Lions International, provides many unfortunate and poor people with the opportunity to see clearly by assisting them in obtaining spectacles.

Marneweck, who shared they were hosting the campaign for the first time, said as part of their recycling efforts, they are planning to host the campaign next year.
