Super Cops and ARA blood drive a success

The event was held at the Northmead Bowling Club on Saturday.

Super Cops and Avenues Residents Association (ARA) joined forces with SANBS to encourage residents of the Avenues to donate blood.

The event was held at the Northmead Bowling Club on March 5.

Marinda Beukes, the chairperson of ARA, told the City Times their aim is to save lives.

“Our slogan is ‘love thy neighbour’. That’s what we work on. We save lives. It doesn’t matter whether it’s welfare, food donation, getting people jobs and keeping them safe. We save lives.

“It’s an honour for someone to donate their blood to save a life. This falls within our concept of loving our neighbours,” she said.

Julia Ndaba of SANBS said it’s important for people to donate blood because hospitals are overwhelmed with patients in need of blood transfusion.

“Some patients have severe iron deficiency and need blood transfusions, including cancer patients and accident survivors.

“We do everything as an organisation to encourage more people to donate blood. We will be pleased if many came out to donate to help save lives,” Ndaba said.

Community building

Beukes reiterated the importance of unity within a community. She said the power of a community lies in loving each other.

“If you love your neighbour, you will care for them. We’ve started seven businesses during Covid-19 for our neighbours, and the support has been overwhelming.

“We look after the elderly. We work closely with Benoni Welfare and also run House of Hope, where we take people in to give them a chance at life.”

She added ARA was thankful for the difference Super Cops has made in the Avenues since joining forces three years ago.

“The partnership has been in existence for three years. Super Cops has a designated vehicle that operates in the area. This means reaction time is of the utmost importance.

“Crime is low because of the community’s vigilance. We all work together to keep our streets safe. We have the Voluntary Avenues Surveillance Team that helps a lot with patrols. We know our people and their movements, and with Super Cops, we are secured,” she said.
