$20 000 worth of counterfeit money seized

Of the five suspects arrested, four were foreign nationals.

Members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) arrested five suspects at an Isandovale Hostel and confiscated $20 000 (R302 911) worth of counterfeit banknotes on February 21.

According to WO Grant Giblin, BFS spokesperson, members responded to a tip-off regarding suspicious activity taking place within the room at the hostel.

“Upon arrival, officers were handed a black paper that had been cut into the size of an R100 note, wrapped in foil,” he said.

“Members were led to the room in question and found the suspects in possession of two bags containing counterfeit money as well as another travel bag containing more black paper.

“Our investigations indicate that the suspects were producing the notes in the bathroom of the hostel room.”

Although it is not clear what the notes were intended for, police suspect that they might have been used to be exchanged for legitimate money.

“In this case, a person could have exchanged it without knowing it was counterfeit,” he said.
