SPCA impounds 31 greyhounds transported on a trailer

The dogs were without water or shade when they were transported.

An alert motorist contacted the Benoni SPCA on February 20 when she spotted a taxi pulling a trailer overloaded with greyhounds.

Bianca Peens was driving in Northmead when she saw the taxi and decided to confront the occupants.

“I approached the men in the taxi to find out why the dogs were so overloaded in the trailer. They said they were going to a dog race.

“I phoned the Benoni SPCA because the dogs were on top of each other and without water or shade. One of the dogs was bleeding from its mouth,” Peens said.

The men tried to bribe her, but she refused as she cared about the well-being of the dogs.

According to Peens, when the inspector from the Benoni SPCA arrived, he demanded the dogs be taken to the SPCA.
There were 31 dogs and they were all booked into the pound.

Benoni SPCA manager Bronwyn Kleynhans confirmed this.

“The dogs were assessed and were healthy. They were released on February 21 when their owners came with the correct form of transport to transport them,” she said.

The overloaded trailer which was transporting 31 greyhounds to a race.

Kleynhans said the matter has been referred to the Germiston SPCA, as the owners live in that area. They will probe the living conditions of the dogs.

The Benoni SPCA advises the public not to overload animals in any form of transport, as this may lead to injuries.
