Detective’s investigation leads to successful conviction

Thorough investigation bear fruit

Sgt Donovan Naicker, of the Benoni detectives branch, was recently lauded for his investigative work that led to the successful conviction in a murder case.

The case stems back to May 2017 when an EMPD officer was charged with the murder of a 17-year-old, in Bunyan Street.

According to initial reports, officers were responding to information that a gang of youths responsible for robbing learners from local schools were spotted in the area.

Officers approached the suspects, after which one pointed what looked like a revolver at them.
The EMPD officer shot and killed one of the suspects.

According to Capt Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni Police station, Sgt Naicker faced many challenges while investigating the case, including seeking and obtaining reliable witness accounts, as some were vagrants who moved around often.

“Allegations of bribery and corruption were also levelled against the investigating officer, but proved to be untrue,” she said.

“Due to his unwavering dedication and hard work the EMPD officer was recently handed a 15-year prison sentence.”
Naicker received a service award and was commended for his hard work and diligence.
