Residents feeling the pinch of having no water

The metro has shared that there is no estimated restoration time available at the moment.

Parts of Benoni, Daveyton and Etwatwa are still without water due to interruptions at Rand Water’s Mapleton booster substation.

The supply of water to these affected areas has not resumed since February 4.

Scenes of people carrying buckets of water plagued Mina Nawe in Daveyton on February 9, as they roamed the streets in search of water. Local schools also closed early due to the lack of water.

Steven Ramoroane of Mina Nawe was spotted pushing a wheelbarrow which had water buckets he filled at another section in Daveyton.

Steven Ramoroane, one of those affected, said not having water for the whole week has severely impacted him.

“It is unhygienic for us to not have running water on our toilets. My toilet is a mess because we can’t flush,” he said.

Another affected resident, Nqobile Dlamini, said the water resumed on February 7, though the pressure was low.

“On the morning of February 8, we were surprised to wake up to dry taps again. We feel our basic human rights have been violated,” she said.

Due to the lack of water supply in Mina Nawe, residents of Mina Nawe decided to dig up an underground pipe to get water.

Dlamini told City Times water tankers haven’t been dispatched in the area since yesterday.

According to Zweli Dlamini, metro spokesperson, qualified engineers are on site with Eskom and Rand Water technicians to assist with all technical inputs.

Preliminary investigation shows there has been an electrical fault associated with cables at the substation.

“The metro is working towards restoring the 10 MVA transformer, which will assist in keeping all Rand Water pumps operational,” said Dlamini.

Dlamini added there is no estimated restoration time available at the moment.
