WARNING: Hijackings prevalent on Snake Road

Police have beefed up patrols in the area.

Cases of hijacking on Snake Road are becoming more prevalent, and the Benoni SAPS is calling on road users to be vigilant.

According to Capt Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the police station, hijackings on this stretch of road are becoming a weekly occurrence.

“At 10:00 on February 1, a man travelling in a Toyota Land Cruiser stopped at the intersection of Lancaster and Heidelberg roads when an armed man got into the passenger seat and ordered him to drive,” she said.

“They were closely followed by another vehicle. The victim was later blindfolded, had his hands bound and was left in Wattville near the dam.”

In a separate incident, on February 3, at 9:45, a driver of a Toyota Quantum was at the intersection of Rangeview and Dewald Hattingh roads when three armed men, speaking isiZulu entered his vehicle.

“According to the victim, the robots were not working due to load-shedding and the traffic was piling up. He was ordered to the back of the vehicle and later transferred to a blue Toyota Corolla. The assailants left him at the side of the road,” she said.

“We are appealing to road users to exercise extreme caution when making use of this road and to pay close attention to their surroundings.”

Members of the Benoni Crime Prevention Unit are closely monitoring the road and have beefed up patrols within the area.

Any information regarding these incidents or suspicious persons loitering next to the road should be reported to the 10111 helpline. Alternatively, anonymous tips may be shared on the My SAPS app.
