Burglary at EMPD officer’s house foiled, four arrested

A case of possession of suspected house break-in implements and of trespassing has been opened.

An EMPD officer foiled a house break-in at his own home in Rynfield, which led to the arrest of four suspects, on January 25.

The four suspects were arrested after losing control of their vehicle and crashing into a trench on the corner of Pretoria and Jay roads following a high-speed chase by the EMPD officer.

According to Crystal Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Lerato Mopeli, the officer allegedly spotted two men inside his yard. When they realised he had seen them, they jumped over the wall.

“The officer gave chase after noticing the suspects got into a white Toyota Corolla with two male occupants. The high-speed pursuit proceeded until the suspects lost control of the vehicle,” said Mopeli.

Following a high-speed chase with the homeowner, the suspects lost control of the car and crashed into a trench.

Mopeli, who was in the vicinity, assisted in arresting the suspects.

According to Mopeli, two of the four suspects tried to run away. However, with the help of a local security company and community members, they tracked down the remaining suspects.

“We found two pairs of gloves and the top of a pickaxe in the suspects’ vehicle. It was also found that the number plate was false and another number plate which matched the description of the vehicle was found inside the vehicle,” said Mopeli.

Crystal Park SAPS has opened a case of possession of suspected house break-in implements, while a charge of trespassing has been opened at the Benoni SAPS.
