Report misuse of Sassa child grant

To apply for a child support grant go to services.sassa.gov.za.

Sassa encourages people to report primary caregivers who misuse the child support grant to a social worker nearest to them or a Sassa office, said communications manager for Sassa Nandi Mosia.

She also stated that Sassa doesn’t have enough capacity to track every grant beneficiary or their spending habits; however, they are appealing to the public to come forward and report any beneficiary who is misusing their child support grant.

“It is illegal for social grant money to be used for reasons other than for the needs of the child and Sassa has the right to withhold the money and transfer it to a more suitable adult who will use it for the child’s needs,” Mosia said.

She added they have received complaints about people misusing child support grants and in these cases, they resolved the issues by appointing another person within the family who is eligible to focus on the needs of the child.

“The child support grant must be used for the needs of the child, not for the caregiver’s needs,” Mosia said.

She also provided clarity about the speculation that the child support grant is only paid to women.

“It is not only paid to women, but to anyone who is the primary caregiver – whether a mother, father or guardian of the child. The child support grant is paid to a primary caregiver not only to women,” Mosia explained.

People who want to apply for a child support grant or any other grant can visit their nearest Sassa office or visit services.sassa.gov.za.
