AfriForum Benoni brings joy to children, elderly

Santa made stops at four children's homes and an old age home in Benoni.

On December 18, AfriForum Benoni hosted a Christmas Drive, which benefited four children’s homes and an old age home.

Kevin van der Mescht, PRO for AfriForum Benoni, explained it was a joint effort involving ER24, Life One, Mamba, PHP, PHS Supercops, Badboyz Security, Nojack, Dot Towing and AfriForum.

“Over 40 vehicles with lights and sirens escorted Santa Claus in his sleigh to the various locations in Benoni. We made some children and elderly very happy,” Kevin said.

The children’s homes visited were Greater Benoni Child Welfare, Ikhaya da Luz, Sinethembe Hope House and Abraham Kriel Satellite Home.

Shady Pines Alzheimer’s Home also received a visit from Santa and his “elves”.

“We dropped off Christmas gifts, snacks, cooldrinks, pizza and grocery hampers as part of the Christmas Drive,” Kevin said.

“We were extremely grateful to make a difference to 75 children and elderly.

“A big thank you to all the stakeholders mentioned above and especially to the AfriForum Benoni projects team who pulled of this great success in just over a week. I am extremely proud to be part of this awesome organisation and its amazing team members.

“A massive difference was made in many people’s lives, young and old. Once again Benoni came together as one to bring joy to so many people – which was the aim of the event.”

Some kind words from the homes visited:

Abraham Kriel: Thank you so much. The children were so excited when you arrived. We have little girls aged six, eight, 10, 11 and older. Two of these little girls have never had Christmas celebrations in their lives.

Sinethembe Hope House: Thank you to our community for all your love, care and support! Not only for the fantastic pressies but also for all the kindness and support during the years. We have raised about 250 children and young adults over the past 21 years – all at school or matriculated, attending varsity, interned or employed. You have helped and we are grateful. Grant and Sharon.

Shady Pines: To all concerned, on behalf of Shady Pines, I would like to thank you for the wonderful joy, happiness and gifts you brought to these people. They were so excited and couldn’t stop talking about all the characters, especially Father Christmas. I know this has been a real labour of love. Thank you again and God’s richest blessings on you all. Sheena and Shaun.

Ikhaya da Luz: Dear AfriForum team. Wow! Truly an amazing bunch of people coming together to gift presents and treats, but gifting the experience of Christmas celebrations, magic and love. Thank you for your continuous support and presence. Please extend our gratitude and appreciation to everyone involved.
