Benoni Indians Baseball is hosting a Grand Slam this weekend (December 5), as year-end puts a halt to the fixtures for the next five weeks.

This will be a big day for Benoni Indians, as potential sponsors will be hosted on the day to witness baseball and all its glory.

“It will be a fun-filled and action-packed day as all teams from Gauteng will be battling it out,” explained Clifford White, junior chairperson.

“Junior baseball, major league baseball, woman’s baseball, as well as the new Baseball Five, will be showcased on the day, making it the biggest fixture of the year.”

Benoni Indians invite all to join and see the spectacular game that is baseball.

“Come and enjoy a boerewors roll or two and all the refreshments on offer.”

Games will be from 09:00 to 15:00.

The Benoni Indians have also been doing quite well throughout this season and their coach wanted to share their results from this past weekend.

U-10:
• Cherokees beat Boksburg Cardinals 34 – 16
“The Cherokees absolutely dominated with their skill in the much-anticipated local derby. Cherokees slugging 34 runs in five innings and halted the Cardinals attack with their outstanding defence making major league inspired plays, turning three double plays and triple play to take the victory,” said White.
Coach Gareth expressed his pride, stating his team had worked well together and it was a true team effort that fell into place on the day.

• Benoni Chinooks lost to Edenvale Goblin’s 27 – 42
“The two newly formed sides had their first encounter, as the baseball craze has brought more children down to join in both towns. The teams have developed some promising players and their game on the weekend showed great promise for both clubs.”

U-12:
• Benoni Cheyenne beat Edenvale Imps 6-5
“In this nail-biter, Benoni Cheyenne were just able to inch ahead in the last inning after being down by one run with batting in hand. Great teamwork and spirit helped push them to victory in a game that was tough all around.”

• Benoni Apaches beat Alex Badgers 11 – 9
Another newly formed side at Benoni saw Apaches take their first win on the weekend to what was described a joyous moment for players and parents alike.
“The players, lead by coach Kyle Weideman, have worked hard and have shown tremendous growth and are proving to be a team to be reckoned with. Many more wins are expected from this side in the weeks to come.”

U-15:
All games were postponed due to the bad weather and the fields being waterlogged.

U-18:
Benoni Braves beat Palm Ridge 16 – 5
The premier junior side took a solid victory over their rivals after a shocking start saw them five runs down in the first inning.
“Our boys went in and kept their cool. Kyle Schwartz scored two RBIs on his first at bat,” said coach Jerry Pieterse.
“Jordan McAllister took to the mound in his first-ever pitching stint and did a great job as the rookie pitcher. Diego Skippers got a quick three up three down, as the relief pitcher helped halt the Palm Ridge onslaught. Shane McQuirk came on as the closing pitcher and with great defence in the field, victory belonged to the Braves.”

White concluded: “We have had a tremendous response from the community and interest in getting their children involved in baseball and we welcome everyone to see the excitement that is had and shared amongst all. The new year will see games start again on January 15, so please bring your children and join this awesome game.”
