Donated bowls sets find a new home

In 2012 several Benoni bowlers helped with workshops, designed to teach visually impaired and blind children to play bowls

Blind bowler and Airfield resident Beppie Summersgill received three bowling sets from the City Times Be a Sport project.

As the chairperson of Visually Impaired Bowlers Ekurhuleni (Vibe), she chose to donate these to Sibonile School for the Blind in Garthdale AH near Walkerville.

Lindi Mhlungu, principal of the school, and her colleague, Sally Mabotja, HOD for the Severely Intellectually Disabled, were delighted to welcome Summersgill and her husband, Cedric (also her bowling director), and Gale Moffatt (Vibe secretary/treasurer) to the official handover recently.

“In 2012, several Benoni bowlers helped with workshops designed to teach visually impaired and blind children to play bowls,” explained Summersgill.

“Through fund-raising, Sibonile School also received a bowling kit and a long mat to enable the staff to encourage bowling as a sport at the school.

“In 2018, some Vibe members went to the school to carry out further training and refresh the skills of the teachers and learners.

“Now, in 2021, combined with five additional sets of donated bowls from various sources, the learners have more than eight complete sets, which is fantastic.”
