Fund-raiser for leukaemia warrior shines through the rain

The Kempton Park resident is on a German treatment regime to treat his leukaemia.

The Deon’s Day fund-raiser was attended by a host of community members and bikers, on October 2.

The Sons of Old School MC and ARC Warriors Joburg hosted the event as a celebration of a leukaemia warrior, Deon Olivier.

The seven-year-old was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukaemia on June 8. Little Deon was ushered into the premises by the bikers and he got a ride from one of the bikers.

His mother Chantel Olivier said Deon was excited to get his first ride on a bike even though he was scared at first.

She explained that Deon hasn’t been out for the past three months as he wasn’t well on some days.

Deon’s family was also present at the fundraiser. They are Dominic E’Silva (left), Chantel Olivier, Miché Olivier (12), Vincent Olivier, Sarah Sinclair and Hayleigh Sinclair (13). They are seen with Deon (middle).

“He was happy to be out and be in the presence of other children and we are thankful to the organisers,” said Chantel.

His father Vincent said it was so emotional and nice to see everyone coming out to celebrate Deon even though some of the people don’t even know him but they did something nice for him.

“This really means a lot to us and you made Deon’s day,” he said.

Deon, who received a Warrior Award and presents, was lost for words when the City Times asked him how he felt.

As Vincent previously explained, this includes multiple lumbar punchers, various toxic compounds and chemotherapy in liquid and tablet forms. He also needs to disinfect his mouth three times a day after meals.

“We are still very fortunate with regards to medical bills as only a few tests and medications have required extra payment.

“We are currently on medical aid and have received approval for the oncology benefit that should cover up to R200 000.

“After this, we would be liable for 20% of all his medical bills,” he said. “Deon is on the third stage of his treatment, which means that he only has to attend treatment at the hospital twice a month.

“The funds raised at this event will be used to pay his medical bills should there be a need.”

One of the organiser’s, Celia Klokie, said Deon is unable to lead a normal life at this stage. The battle has left him weak and with little enthusiasm.

“I was approached by Deon’s former pre-school principal, Olga Steenekamp of Blouborsie Kleuter en Bewaarskool, who suggested that we do something for him. I then approached the Sons of Old School MC ranking members and Deon’s parents about the idea,” said Celia.

“It was then agreed that we can facilitate a day, dedicated to Deon and his family. All proceeds will go to the family. Celia said the interest and enthusiasm were overwhelming.

“It goes to show what we can achieve anything when we work together. ARC Warriors was the first bike club to offer help and without them, this event would not have happened.

“A big thank you to president Fernando, his crew.”

The SANBS Benoni was at the fund-raiser too.

Caxton Local Media general manager Karen Watts rolled up her sleeves and donated blood.

Donor recruiter Edwin Majoro explained that some leukaemia patients need blood transfusions. He encouraged the community to continue donating blood.

To donate blood, visit the SANBS Benoni at 42 14th Avenue, Northmead, or contact them on 011 897 4951 or 0800 119 031.
