Mom burnt at pre-school dies

Her boyfriend (40) has been charged with murder and will appear in the Benoni Magistrate's Court or in absentia on October 11.

The Daveyton mother, Kgomotso Sekhwela (27), who sustained serious burn wounds when her car was set alight outside the Rynfield pre-school her child (4) attends, died on September 23.

Her boyfriend (40) has been charged with murder and will appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court or in absentia on October 11.

He is also in hospital for the treatment of burn wounds sustained when he set Sekhwela’s car alight outside the school in Miles Sharp Street at around 6:15 on September 13.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele confirmed the mom died at a hospital in Kempton Park and that the charge against the boyfriend was changed from attempted murder to murder.

He is also charged with malicious damage to property and reckless driving.

“If the suspect has not been discharged from hospital by October 11, he will appear in absentia,” Sekele said.

One of the woman’s close friends, who did not want to be named, described her as a loving, caring, selfless and supportive sister and friend.

“I will miss her advice. She was always there for us whenever we needed her. Kgomotso was the best friend ever,” she said.

“She had recently completed a Bachelor of Education at Unisa and bought herself a car around April. She was very proud of her achievements.”

In footage seen by the City Times, Sekhwela and her cousin had just dropped her child at the pre-school. When they returned to the car, a Toyota Quantum, driven by her boyfriend, parked next to them.

The couple argued before the man went back to his taxi and retrieved a plastic bottle.

The suspect then poured the contents of the bottle into her car through the driver’s window, which he had smashed, and onto Sekhwela, who was standing nearby. As the car was set alight, she and the boyfriend also caught fire.

Her family declined a request for comment from the City Times.
