After the complete renovation of Benoni High School’s media centre, learners and staff can use the facility to search the internet, select reading material and enjoy an hour or two engrossed in a book.
School principal Dr Eugene Rooyakkers, after whom the media centre is named, feels libraries are cornerstones of healthy communities.
“They give people the opportunity to search for employment, explore various research fields and serve as a gathering place.”
Rooyakkers sees a media centre as an evolving structure.
“With the addition of technology, virtual references and databases to Benoni High, the school now has a 21st-century media centre.
“The centre was in desperate need of an upgrade. All it took was a few creative touches and the repurposing of existing furniture and fixtures to create a space where learners will enjoy expanding their knowledge.”
Staff members, including Etienne Bekker, were responsible for the renovations.
