UPDATE: The Ekurhuleni metro to construct a new outfall sewer line to reduce sewer complaints

The anticipated completion date of the Apex X12 outfall sewer line is the end of 2022.

Following an article in the City Times, “Residents subjected to regular sewer spills”, the Ekurhuleni metro has commented that they are constructing a new outfall sewer line for Apex X12 along Wolver Hampton Street and Main Reef Road.

According to the metro’s spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the outfall sewer line will phase out the existing Rynsoord, Mackenzie Park and Apex sewer pump stations to improve the sewer reticulation network in Ward 73.

“The water and sewer infrastructure in ward 73 is aging generally, hence there has been complaints especially sewer blockages in the area.

“The experience also indicates that some blockages are as a result of the abuse of the sewer system by residents depositing foreign objects, such as building rubble, stones, rugs and so on into the system.

“The ward especially Apex, Mackenzie Park and Rynsoord is also infested with illegal miners or zama zama’s who deliberately block the sewer system with sand and stones for their illegal mining activities.”

Dlamini added that of late, the department has been receiving a high volume of sewer complaints not only in Ward 73 but also in other areas that the depot is responsible for such as Benoni, Daveyton and Etwatwa.

“Though the metro’s resources are stretched as a result of the above-mentioned facts, all complaints are receiving the necessary attention as and when they are reported.”

The metro had completed preliminary designs for the upgrade of sewer lines along Mowbray Avenue and Wilstead Street, detail designs will be completed during the 2021/22 financial year after the appointment of the new panel of consultant’s subject to budget availability.

The anticipated completion date of the Apex X12 outfall sewer line is the end of 2022.
