Copper cable theft at Gumbi Cemetery plunges Mayfield area into darkness

Report any criminal activities around them to the service delivery call centre on 0860 543 000

Two suspects were detained at the Daveyton Police Station and a case of theft of non-ferrous metals has been opened after they were spotted digging trenches at Gumbi Cemetery on the morning of June 23.

According to the Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, guards from a private security company contracted to the metro caught the suspects while they were cutting the 3.1m x 185 mm x 3 core CU (11kv) PILC valued at R4 652.14, with repairs estimated to cost over R9 000.

“One suspect was caught inside the trench with a shovel and hacksaw with blade digging to expose more of the 4m x 1m x 500mm cable.”

Dlamini emphasised that the fight against cable theft needs the involvement of all citizens.

“Community members need to play an active role and report any criminal activities around them to the service delivery call centre on 0860 543 000,” he said.
