Waste removal services expected to improve

He added that the lack of service has led to residents dumping illegally in open spaces.

Delays caused by the refuse removal services were expected to improve.

This is according to metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

Benoni residents have raised their concerns due to the lack of waste removal services in the area that has been ongoing for weeks.

Ward 73 Clr Sinethemba Matiwane has escalated the matter to the mayor in an email, where he highlighted that the refuse had not been collected weekly, which could lead to potential health hazards.

He added that the lack of service has led to residents dumping illegally in open spaces.

To add to the lack of waste removal services, the street cleaners in the CBD have downed their tools due to the lack of PPE.

This had resulted in business owners cleaning the front of their stores. One of the owners paid to have his refuse removed to the waste depot as he could no longer see the waste pile up.

Dlamini explained that the depot has been experiencing challenges due to shortages of vehicles as a result of mechanical breakdowns.

With regards to the employees on strike, he said the situation is being addressed through contracted service providers.
