Daveyton home for the disabled thankful for assistance

The 17 residents have also started art and craft classes with Michael Maqungo, who is one of the board members at the home.

The Elethu Cheshire Home in Daveyton is grateful for all the assistance it received following the article published in the City Times’ edition of March 26.

The home was pleading for monetary donations that could assist it in paying its electricity bill, which was R182 000 due to non-payment since 2019.

Sandile Mafu, who is the manager at the home, said they received a R30 000 donation from Khayisana Trust and R150 from Gerry’s Liquor Warehouse, which made a huge difference.

“We were also approached by Coterie Marketing who will be assisting us with digital marketing so we can attract funders and develop a website for us,” said Mafu.

“We now also have physiotherapists from the Daveyton Main Clinic who visit the home twice a month.”

The 17 residents have also started art and craft classes with Michael Maqungo, who is one of the board members at the home.

Maqungo said the residents have been enjoying the classes and it keeps them busy while stimulating their minds.

Mafu added that some of the residents and disabled community members have been offered a free learnership for an accredited national certificate in contact centre (NQF two).

The learnership is offered by Boston City Campus and Business College, Ree Foundation and Azaria Help Foundation.

The home plans to reopen its charity shop and it is pleading for any donations of second-hand items.

The manager said they would also welcome any volunteers to teach the residents mathematics and how to read and write. “We need people who have patience though.”

The NPO gets support from the Department of Social Development; however, it does not cover all their needs.

The home will appreciate any donation of food, blankets, socks, art and craft items, toiletries, vegetable seeds for its garden, wool for the elderly to knit and adult diapers.

Anyone who would like to donate or volunteer can contact Mafu on 011 424 7050 or email daveyton@cherishehomes.org.za.
