The Smoke Train Blues Movement SA donates to Manger Care Centre

The Smoke Train Movement SA is a group of various musicians who were brought together through their mutual love for the blues.

Beneficiaries at the Manger Care Centre (MCC) in Brentwood Park not only received a donation of vegetables but were also entertained and encouraged by members of the Smoke Train Movement SA on April 24.

The Smoke Train Movement SA is a group of various musicians who were brought together through their mutual love for the blues.

Founder of the movement Nico Lawrence chose MCC as their charity because he struggled with alcohol addiction that landed him in rehab 13 years ago.

He thought it would be fitting to donate to the organisation and share his experiences to inspire and motivate others to keep pushing.

An emotional Nico spoke of the times when his alcohol addiction led to him almost losing his wife and son.

“The turning point for me was when we had to write out our eulogy and read it to our families and I could not invite my mother and father.”

Once he got out of rehab he sold sweets at a local swimming pool and shyly played his guitar. Now he travels around the world performing the blues.

He jokingly said he only really started playing music because he realised the music brought more customers.

“I made a conscious decision to make the right choices after rehab because sometimes being boxed up causes rebellion.”

The vegetables donated were bought from the AfriCAN Agripreneurs Project which buys their tunnels from MCC to grow their crops.

After the performance, all beneficiaries left feeling good as they were touched by the sounds of the blues.
