City Times reader shares memorable memories

It was such great excitement to share with Benoni. No such thing as doing it on the internet.

Ingrid Dewberry writes:

It was with great interest that I read in the City Times edition of February 5 that the paper is celebrating its 100th year.

What a great achievement and dedication by all concerned in making sure we still receive our weekly newspaper.

As you see, it took me a whole month to go through all my scrapbooks and photo albums to find information about when I appeared in the paper.

The first encounter was when each of my children was born and my husband went down to the Benoni City Times to place a notice on the classifieds page under births.

It was such great excitement to share with Benoni. No such thing as doing it on the internet.

My children were regularly in the paper regarding their academic and cultural activities in primary and high school. I’m one very proud mom to read it in the paper.

We were involved in many community service projects with Round Table and Rotary from 1983 until 2001.

Every time there was an article or photo in the City Times during that period involving our club I would cut it out and stick it into my scrapbooks (12 in total).

During this period, I appeared in the City Times 16 times and twice was on the front page.

I was the public relations officer (PRO) for Rotary for six years and made sure the club was well presented in the newspaper regularly.

I would take the photographs and write the story and go into town to speak to a journalist about putting it in the paper.

I’ve dealt with many journalists over the years but only have a card from the last one I dealt with, a Werner Swart.
Thank you for reading some of my City Times journeys.
